Attitudes

Be willing to facilitate disclosure of sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status.

Avoid asking questions about sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status that are not clinically relevant.

Quality Improvement Activity Ideas

Practice Policy

  • Develop a policy on the collection of information on a patient’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex status, and the inclusion of key relationships. Policy should also cover who is authorised to collect this information.

Staff training

  • Train identified staff how to collect information on a consumer’s sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status, and relationships.

Rights and Responsibilities document

  • Develop or update existing document describing the patient’s rights and responsibilities demonstrating LGBTI-inclusive practice in information collection, storage, use and disclosure.

Current practice review

  • Review forms within the practice to ensure adherence to the “guide to taking an inclusive sexual history”

NB. This strategy and suggested QI activities link to Communication - When taking a sexual history, be aware of the fluidity of sexual expression and the “coming-out” process
